Dr. Waziri completed his undergraduate training at Washington University in St. Louis and then received his medical degree from the University of Iowa College Of Medicine. During medical school he spent two years in the Neuroimmunology Branch of the NIH as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Scholar. He subsequently completed his residency in neurological surgery at the Neurological Institute of Columbia University. Dr. Waziri’s clinical and research interests primarily focus on treatment options for malignant brain tumors. His research laboratory is exploring interactions between the immune system and malignant gliomas, specifically investigating the role of tumor cells in the recruitment of immunosuppressive cells and related therapeutic options for improving anti-tumor immunity. He also has an interest in invasive neurophysiological monitoring for patients with acute brain injury, focusing on development of a novel technique using intracranial EEG monitoring for bedside alarm systems in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit.
