Functional & Movement Disorder Neurosurgery

Dr. Steven Ojemann, Director of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, specializes in the surgical treatment of movement disorders, epilepsy, and neurostimulation for the treatment of chronic pain conditions.  The surgical management of movement disorders includes the implantation of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) systems for conditions including Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and certain forms of dystonia.  Epilepsy surgery includes implantation of recording electrodes, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), and surgery to remove epileptogenic brain tissue.  Surgical treatments for pain include spinal cord stimulation (SCS), as well as implantation of pumps for delivery of medication directly into the spinal fluid (intrathecal drug delivery).

These surgical programs are founded on close multidisciplinary collaboration with colleagues in neurology and pain management.  The University of Colorado's specialists in movement disorders and epilepsy neurology, and from the anesthesia pain clinic, work together with neurosurgery to assure that each patient is provided with the full spectrum of medical and surgical options for his or her particular condition.
